Aesthetics and Functionality Combined in a Public Bench

Traditionally, public benches have been designed solely for the purpose of sitting. However, Fold breaks away from this conventional approach by incorporating both form and function. Tsui recognized the need for a bench that not only offers a place to rest but also provides a surface for activities such as enjoying a cup of coffee or working on a laptop.

What sets Fold apart is its simplicity and versatility. The design consists of a single piece of plywood that is folded back on itself at an angle, creating an additional surface that can be used as a table. This ingenious manipulation allows the bench to retain its sleek and sturdy form without the need for any extensions or appendages.

When it comes to the production process, Fold utilizes a combination of plywood and bronze. The plywood is steamed and then placed in a custom-built mold for bending. This technique ensures that the bench maintains its desired curvature while also providing the necessary strength and durability.

With overall dimensions of 1480(L) x 1010(W) x 730(H)mm, Fold is designed to be suitable for public spaces of various sizes. Its compact yet functional design makes it an ideal choice for parks, plazas, and other communal areas.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was achieving the perfect angle for both comfortable seating and a functional table surface. Additionally, the placement of the legs had to be carefully considered to maintain stability while balancing the proportions and ratio with the plywood.

Fold encourages users to explore different uses and gestures, allowing them to adapt the bench to their specific needs. Whether it's enjoying a meal outdoors, working on a project, or simply taking a moment to relax, Fold provides a versatile and stylish solution.

The development of Fold began in early 2019 and was completed for production in late 2019. This innovative design has garnered recognition in the industry, receiving the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2021. This accolade acknowledges Fold's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of public spaces.
